The Lagos Wind: Understanding the 'Nortada'
The secret to kitesurfing in Lagos is the Nortada—the powerful Northwest wind that defines the Portuguese summer. From April to September, thermal heating across the land creates consistent afternoon sessions.
The Venturi Effect: Because of the unique geography between the Monchique Mountains and the coastline, the wind in the Alvor Lagoon is often 3-5 knots stronger than the forecast predicts. When you see a clear, sunny day on Windguru, you can expect the Nortada to kick in between 2 PM and 7 PM.
Winter & South Winds: From October to March, we transition to Southerly winds. These bring warmer air and excellent wave conditions to Meia Praia, perfect for those looking to escape the Northern European winter.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kitesurfing in Lagos
What is the best month to kitesurf in Lagos?
The peak season is June to August for the most consistent wind. However, May and September are fantastic "shoulder months" with fewer crowds and reliable conditions.
Is the Alvor Lagoon beginner-friendly?
Yes! The Ria de Alvor is one of the best places in Europe to learn. At low tide, the water is shallow and flat, allowing students to stand up while practicing their kite control.
What size kite should I bring to Lagos?
For the summer Nortada, the most common sizes are 7m to 10m for average-weight riders. If you are coming in the spring or autumn, a 12m is a good addition to your quiver.

Do I need a wetsuit?
Even in summer, the Atlantic water is refreshing. We recommend a 3/2mm shorty or full suit for the summer, and a 4/3mm if you are riding in the winter or early spring.
Where can I check the wind forecast?
We recommend checking Windguru (Lagos - Meia Praia). Look for NW directions and remember to add a few knots for the thermal effect!
