Why the Alvor Lagoon is the Algarve’s Ultimate Classroom for Kitesurfing & Wingfoiling

If you’ve ever tried learning to kitesurf or wing foil in the open ocean, you know the drill: you drop your board, a massive ocean wave hits you in the face, and suddenly your gear is 20 meters away downwind. You spend more time body-dragging and swallowing saltwater than actually standing on your board.
When we started EA Kite & Wing School back in 2018, we chose our home base in Lagos for a very specific reason: the Ria de Alvor Lagoon.
Whether you are trying to stand up on a kiteboard for the first time or trying to get your first sustained flight on a hydrofoil, where you learn changes everything. Here is why the lagoon makes learning up to 3 times faster (and way more fun) than the open sea.

1. Waist-Deep Water = Instant Confidence
The biggest mental barrier for beginners is deep water. In the Alvor Lagoon, you can stand up almost everywhere.
No endless body-dragging: If you crash or lose your board, you simply stand up, walk a few steps, grab your gear, and try again.
Easy relaunching: Relaunching a kite is infinitely easier when you can plant your feet on the sandy bottom instead of treading water while managing your lines.
Energy saver: You save your energy for riding, not swimming. A 3-hour session in the lagoon gives you triple the actual board time compared to a deep-water ocean session.
2. Butter-Flat Water (Goodbye, Chop!)
Ocean chop is the enemy of balance. When you are trying to master your foot placement or control your power, a bumpy surface makes your board unstable.
Because the lagoon is completely sheltered from the ocean swells by a massive natural sandbank, the water stays beautifully flat. For Wingfoiling, this is an absolute game-changer. Flying on a hydrofoil requires subtle weight adjustments; learning those micro-movements on flat water allows your brain to figure out the muscle memory without a wave knocking you off-balance.
3. Safety First: The Nortada Wind Cleaned Up
Lagos is famous for the Nortada—the powerful North wind that blows consistently all summer. On the main ocean beaches (like Meia Praia), this wind blows cross-offshore. If something goes wrong out there, the wind is trying to push you out to sea.
In the Alvor Lagoon, we get the same incredible, consistent wind strength, but with a massive safety net. The lagoon is an enclosed basin.
