The Algarve is famous for its incredible kitesurfing conditions, especially in the flat, safe waters of the Alvor Lagoon. But knowing when and where the wind will hit just right is crucial for an epic session. That's where Windy.com comes in!
While it might look complex with all those colours and lines, Windy.com is your best friend for forecasting. Here at EA Kite Lagos, we live and breathe the wind, and we're sharing our pro tips to help you master Windy.com, specifically for kitesurfing in our beautiful region.
Why Bother with Windy.com?
Forget guessing games or relying on outdated forecasts. Windy.com gives you:
Hyper-local accuracy: Essential for understanding how the Algarve's unique geography affects the wind.
Multiple models: See what different supercomputers predict, helping you spot reliable patterns.
Real-time observations: Check if the forecast is actually happening right now.
Step 1: Get to Know the Models – Your Forecasting Dream Team
Windy.com isn't just one forecast; it's a collection of powerful weather models. For kitesurfing in the Algarve, these are your key players:
ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts): The Global Guru
What it is: Considered the most accurate global model in the world.
When to trust it: Excellent for general trends, major wind systems (like the strong "Nortada"), and planning your sessions 2+ days in advance.
Why it's important: If ECMWF shows a big wind event, it's very likely coming!
AROME: The Local Hero for the Algarve Coast
What it is: A high-resolution model specifically designed for Western Europe.
When to trust it: This is your go-to for short-term forecasts (0-48 hours) in the Algarve. AROME excels at predicting local effects, like the "thermal winds" that pop up in the afternoon.
Why it's important: The Algarve's landscape creates unique wind patterns (especially the thermal effect in summer). AROME is much better at capturing these nuances than global models.
ICON-EU: The Strong Backup for Europe
What it is: Another excellent European model, often a reliable alternative to AROME.
When to trust it: Use it to cross-reference AROME's predictions for the short term. If AROME and ICON-EU agree, you've got a very strong forecast.
Step 2: How to "Read" the Wind for Alvor Lagoon
Now that you know the players, here’s how to interpret what they're telling you for the best flat-water conditions:
Look for Consistency:
On Windy.com, scroll down to the bottom of the forecast table and click "Compare."
This shows you all the models side-by-side. If ECMWF, AROME, and ICON-EU's lines are close together for wind speed and direction, you have a highly reliable forecast. Get ready to ride!
If the lines are scattered, expect more gusty and unpredictable conditions.
Understand the "Thermal Effect" (Especially in Summer):
The Alvor Lagoon is surrounded by land that heats up under the sun. This heat draws in cooler air from the Atlantic, often boosting the wind by 5-10 knots in the afternoon, even if the general forecast seems light.
Pro Tip: If ECMWF predicts 10 knots, AROME might show 15-20 knots in the afternoon. Trust AROME for this thermal boost! This is why many of our best sessions happen after lunch.
Check Nearby Weather Stations:
Click on the "Reported Wind" overlay on Windy.com and select a nearby station (like Lagos Marina, Portimão, or Faro Airport).
Windy will show you a graph comparing the actual observed wind to what each model predicted.
Your Mission: See which model's line has been closest to the real-time wind observations over the last 24 hours. That model is the most accurate for your specific location right now.
Pay Attention to Direction:
For Alvor Lagoon, a Northwest (NW) to West (W) wind is generally the best for clean, flat water. A direct South wind can sometimes make the water choppier.
Always check the arrow direction!
Step 3: What to Do with Your Newfound Knowledge
Plan Ahead: Use ECMWF for your weekly planning.
Daily Check: Use AROME and ICON-EU for your daily "should I go now?" check.
Don't Overthink It (Too Much!): If you're ever unsure, or if the forecast looks a bit marginal, just contact us directly at EA Kite Lagos! We're on the ground, feeling the wind, and we'll give you the most up-to-date, hyper-local advice. We know the Alvor Lagoon like the back of our hand!
The "Secret" Southerly Winds: Perfect for Beginners
While the strong Northwest "Nortada" gets all the fame, we have a local secret: the Southwest (SW), South (S), and Southeast (SE) winds.
Even when the forecast shows these directions are light, they provide ultra-steady, consistent pressure in the Alvor Lagoon. This "clean" air is a dream for:
First-Timers: No gusty surprises. It’s the safest environment to learn kite control without feeling overwhelmed.
Cruising on Big Gear: We have a huge fleet of light-wind specific kites and boards. These winds turn the lagoon into a peaceful playground where you can glide for miles while others are stuck on the beach waiting for a gale.
Confidence Building: Because these winds are less intimidating, you can focus on your board starts and stance in total calm.
